There is one word that has become lost from our vocabulary and that is “Thankfulness”. Oh, maybe not for everyone, but for many of us, we forget to say Thank You. We don’t have this feeling of thankfulness and so why would we say thank you? We don’t appreciate acts of kindness or for that matter anything that may be good. People don’t reach out to people, especially strangers. We have lost decency from our society. We have drawn a line in the sand and if you are this way or that way, believing in this or that, we just don’t have anything to do with you. Such is the polarization today in our politics and in our moral beliefs of right and wrong. Even a positive and a negative current can co-exist in an electrical circuit, but we can’t as people. Families can not because they will not come together for thanksgiving because of our blinded eyes. You and I do not have to agree to be friends. We do not have to agree to be family. Love is what makes us united, at least it should, but even that is missing today. Why have we allowed ourselves to be so divided? Because we are not thankful for each other. There are people who will not even attend someone’s funeral because they did not agree with them in life. We do not even appreciate life itself. There is a saying, “United we stand divided we fall.” Unfortunately many people want us to fall. Life is so short, and if we stand apart, what will history write about this moment in time? Certainly civilized people should be able to live together and yet we are coming apart at the seams. We fought wars so people could live in peace. We rebuilt the cities of our enemies. And yet, today, we are not thankful that society did not annihilate each other. We draw farther and farther apart, as far as the North Pole is from the South Pole. Where will this leave us ? Isolated! No, not from the world but from each other. Forget love, forget peace, this is what they wanted in the 60’s. No, today these same people want separation, they want power, they want self-indulgence. We lost gratitude and thankfulness and appreciation, for not only life itself, but for family, and once friends and even morality and there is no conscience. Our language has become filthy and so has our minds. Rebuke, no this not a rebuke, this is a call for people to return to being civil and loving and caring. We can not care about people when we break the law to do it. We can not care about people when we hurt others in doing it. Thankful, being thankful means that we have to let go of our pride and our ways and everything that comes between us and another person. I am thankful for you. I am thankful that you came into my life. I am thankful that you are my friend, you are my family, you are my neighbor, my co-worker. Nothing matters more than this. This Thanksgiving let’s show our thankfulness for each other. Let’s take down the wall that divides us, and let’s build up a wall of love and gratitude with thanksgiving. “Let’s come together right now,” in thankfulness.
