Here are only a few facts about the merry month of May
According to the Roman poet Ovid, the month was named after the maiores (elders) to honor them, while June was named after the iuniores (young people).
May Day is known for the May Day celebrations of the Maypole dance, and also, hoping for a great agricultural season. By May, the chances of snow are gone and the farmers have planted most, if not, all of their crops. May Day also is the time when they would crown a queen. The May Queen is a girl who rides or walks at the front of a parade for May Day celebrations. In the Catholic Church they crown the statue of Mary as Queen of Heaven. May 1, 1886, Mayday, marked the first day of organized labor strikes in several cities. In Chicago, protests turned violent in what became known as the Haymarket Affair, leaving several police and protesters killed or injured. May 1st is widely recognized as International Workers’ Day, but in 1882 New York started the first Labor Day in September, which we now celebrate. We can not forget Cinco De Mayo and the fun time that is to celebrate. Could May hold some significance for you? Remembering dates and times are an important part of life. Birthdays, anniversaries, are important events that we do not want to forget. But how about deaths?
Memorial Day is a time that every American should stop and remember all those who died so that we could be free and Yes! We are free! In all of the wars that we have fought in, we have lost at a minimum over 1 million people. Fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, all who gave their lives so that we could be free. We ought to never forget that freedom comes at a cost. So on the day that we are to remember and give thanks for these people who fought for us and even died for us, and even those who live with their wounds, physical and mental, and injuries, that we at least, must remember them and give thanks. When we burn an American flag, it is as if we slapped these people in the face, telling them that we care less what they did for us, because America is not with it. How sad, for we honor those who have died for less worthy causes. One more thing to remember in May and that is our mothers.
Mother’s Day is a special time of year because our mothers should be special to us. The Bible tells us to honor our mother and father. What a great time to honor our mothers and to hold them up and make them feel special. What a great time to say, “Thank You!” If May was named to honor the elders, then I can see why we chose May to remember our mothers. If the church in May crowns Mary as queen, then maybe we should be crowning our mothers as the Mayday Queen, as Queen of our homes.
Enjoy your month of May!
